In an online live-stream event today (12th of March), Mi has taken their covers off the much anticipated Redmi Note 9 Pro and Note 9 Pro Max phones. Surprisingly, Mi didn’t announce a regular Redmi Note 9 today and instead introduced a new ‘Pro Max’ moniker this time. Here’s everything we know about the new phones; everything you need to know.

Redmi Note 9 Pro specs & features

The Redmi Note Pro series of phones has seen a year-on-year VFM upgrade and every version has sold exceptionally well. The Note 9 Pro though, unlike the past, is the lower-priced variant of the two devices launched today and seems to replace the regular Note 9.

Mi pushed the camera prowess of the new phones in teasers and advertisements really aggressively, so let’s start with those. The Note 9 Pro features a quad-camera setup at the rear, placed inside a rectangular housing similar to Huawei Mate 20 Pro’s camera housing. The primary one is a 48MP Samsung ISOCELL GM2 sensor with F/1.79 aperture, accompanied by an 8MP 120-degree FOV ultra-wide sensor, a 5MP macro sensor, and a 2MP depth sensor. The primary sensor can record 4K 30fps as well as 960fps super-slow-motion videos.

Both the primary and the ultra-wide sensors support super-stabilization in videos, which is a hybrid of OIS and EIS, which makes the videos very stable.

On the front, there’s a 16MP selfie shooter placed in a punch hole at the top-center of the display.

Talking of the display, it’s a 6.67-inch 20:9 IPS LCD panel with FullHD+ resolution and a refresh rate of 60Hz. The panel is covered by 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for protection against scratches and

In terms of internals, the Redmi Note 9 Pro packs the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G, which is built on the 8nm process. The SoC packs the Adreno 618 GPU. There are two RAM-Storage variants on offer: 4-64 and 6-128. The phone features UFS 2.1 for internal storage and a dedicated micro-SD card slot for memory expansion up to 512 Gigs.

All this hardware is powered by a 5020mAh Li-Po battery that supports 18W fast charging with the provided charger in the box.

For I/O, there’s a USB 2.0 Type-C port at the bottom. It is accompanied by the primary microphone, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and the loudspeaker. Yes, the IR blaster is also retained, and it sits on the top, as always. The fingerprint sensor is mounted on the side into the power button. Among other common connectivity options, like Bluetooth 5.0 and dual 4G, there’s support for NavIC, since the SD730G comes with NavIC compatibility.

Talking about build and design, the Note 8 Pro series carries forward Mi’s Aura design which debuted in the Note 7 series. The phone’s body is basically two curved Gorilla Glass 5 sheets and in the middle sits a plastic frame. The rear camera housing has a pronounced bump, which is the only build and design aspect we wish was flushed with the body, but that’s what it is. Oh, and there’s P2i coating this time around, making the new phone resistant to dust and accidental water splashes.

For software, the Note 9 Pro series comes loaded with Android 10 beneath the heavy MIUI 11 skin. There still is quite some amount of junk and bloat, and yes, unfortunately, the spammy ads do make a comeback. MIUI 11 has a lot of customization and optimization options, but at the same time, has faced the heat from customers due to the ads and bloatware it comes with. Thankfully though, a lot of the bloat can be uninstalled.

Redmi Note 9 Pro Max specs & features

The Note 9 Pro Max carries almost the same specs and features as that of the Note 9 Pro, except some upgrades.

The Note 9 Pro gets a 64MP primary camera instead of the Note 9 Pro’s 48MP, and also a 32MP selfie snapper instead of 16MP. The Note 9 Pro also gets a faster 33W charger in the box that can charge the phone from 0 to 50% in 30 minutes. The Note 9 Pro Max also gets a special z-axis vibration motor they’re calling ‘flagship haptic sensor’ that is supposed to give better haptic feedback. Other than these, the specs remain the same as the Note 9 Pro.
