OnePlus 8 Lite roundup: specs, release date, prices, renders, leaks, and everything else

Planning to buy a midranger? You might wanna wait a few weeks...
OnePlus 8 Lite roundup: specs, release date, prices, renders, leaks, and everything else 1

Whether you believe it or not, it looks like OnePlus is finally bringing back the OnePlus X lineup. Of course, this time around, the phone is tipped to be named the OnePlus 8 Lite. Whether the ‘Lite’ lineup is here to stay or it is just another “experiment” remains to be seen, but for now, what we can be certain of, is that the OnePlus 8 Lite looks very real from the number of leaks and rumors we’ve come across so far.

Well, we decided to stockpile all those rumors and leaks, filter out the less-trustworthy ones, and present the most believable ones to you in this detailed, updated roundup.

OnePlus 8 Lite release date

Our best tipsters and guesses are saying that the OnePlus 8 Lite shall launch in the same event alongside the higher-end OnePlus phones – OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro, that is expected to happen by April. The date isn’t official yet, but we don’t think OnePlus will hold a special event for the launch of the Lite.

OnePlus 8 Lite expected price & availability

While we have no clue at the moment for what the 8 Lite would cost, but considering it’ll compete with the likes of the Pixel 3a (and the upcoming Pixel 4a) and Samsung’s new A-series mid-range phones, we’re expecting to see a price tag of around $400 US (~ ₹40,000 in India) for the base variant.

For the availability, there’s a good possibility of the 8 Lite not launching in the US. We believe OnePlus will keep the 8 Lite reserved for emerging and price-sensitive markets like India. OnePlus might be looking to steal Xiaomi’s and Pocophone’s limelight with the 8 Lite in the price-sensitive markets. We could also see the 8 Lite entirely replace the 8 in these emerging markets.

OnePlus 8 Lite build & design

According to the abundance of device mockups and renders we’ve come across so far, the OnePlus 8 Lite is the one that looks built and designed unlike any other OnePlus phone we’ve held. That huge pronounced rectangular rear camera housing and bump remind us of Samsung’s phones, and we haven’t seen that arrangement on a OnePlus phone yet.

For the body, the 8 Lite is rumored to be having a 3D curved Gorilla Glass 5 cover on the rear and a 2.5D Gorilla Glass 5 on the front. No metal railing is to be found on the renders we have seen, and it makes sense as OnePlus would be looking to do some cost-cutting here. A leaked spec-sheet also says there would be IP53 certification on the 8 Lite, but we’d rather hold our horses before getting our hopes high.

We can expect 2-3 color variants of the 8 Lite, similar to the existing phones.

OnePlus 8 Lite expected specs & features

This is where things get the most exciting, as well as, well, unclear. Let’s begin with the internals, shall we?

According to a leaked spec-sheet last month, OnePlus is supposedly going with a MediaTek SoC for the 8 Lite, referred to as the MediaTek 100. While this is the most believable spec-sheet we’ve come across so far, but we seriously hope OnePlus goes with a Snapdragon 700 series chip instead of the MediaTek one. A MediaTek chip would mean certain restrictions and limitations, including almost zero aftermarket development for the 8 Lite, which is one of OnePlus’s USPs.

The phone is tipped to come in two RAM-storage variants: 8-128 and 8-256, with UFS 3. Micro-SD expansion is also not likely.

Talking of optics, the OnePlus 8 Lite is rumored to pack three sensors at the back and one at the front. The (chunky) rear camera housing is said to pack a 48MP f/1.7 IMX586 sensor, accompanied by a 16MP f/2.2 ultrawide and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto sensors. While most of the leaks point at 3 sensors, we are also hearing rumors of there being only two cameras at the rear, so don’t be surprised if there, in fact, are only two of them. The primary rear camera is said to feature OIS and EIS too.

On the front, the selfie shooter (that sits in a dedicated hole on the display this time, instead of a traditional notch) is said to be a wide 16MP sensor.

The display is said to be a 6.4-inch 90Hz FHD+ OLED panel with narrow bezels. OnePlus had already announced few months ago that all its future phones shall feature displays with at-least 90Hz refresh rate, and the 8 Lite’s rumored spec falls in line with this.

A 4000mAh cell is said to power everything. While the higher-end 8 and 8 Pro are said to get an upgraded and faster version of WARP charge (50W), the 8 Lite is said to retain 30W WARP charge via the USB 2.0 (8 and 8 Pro shall come with USB 3.1) Type-C port.

Other things the 8 Lite shall most probably skip include the under-display fingerprint sensor. While the renders (and the leaked prototype) don’t seem to show an optical fingerprint sensor at the rear of the phone, it is very likely that OnePlus places it on the side under the power button. 5G is also said to be absent, along with wireless charging, and though we’d have loved it if it was present: the headphone jack.

Apart from all these, the usual set of connectivity options (including WiFi 6), alert slider, stereo speakers, and multiple microphones shall mostly be present on the Lite.

That’s pretty much all we have on the 8 Lite for now. When OnePlus gradually migrated to the upper-midrange – flagship price range, the 8 Lite could indeed bring back OnePlus into the midrange market again, if executed correctly.

Needless to say, we’ll keep updating this page with new details and corrections as and when we have any.
