It is confirmed that LG is rebooting it’s Android smartphone lineup, and ‘LG Velvet’ is the brand’s first new product in the reboot. LG says Velvet is the first phone in a new line of phones that emphasizes design over specs.
LG isn’t just thinking that only its new phone will lure you into buying it, it thinks the name will too. The company has named the upcoming phone in their new product lineup ‘Velvet’, which conveys its “smoothness and premium softness”. In a press release, LG announced the name of the new smartphone alongside a few key details.
The design of the LG Velvet will be radically different from existing phones, according to LG. The phone is said to house a “raindrop” camera design comprising of separately-seated lenses, and, what looks like, no camera housing bump. LG is also touting a “3D arc design”, which essentially means 3D curved glasses on both the front and the rear.
Apart from these, we don’t have many details about the phone yet, but we’re hearing rumors of the phone packing upper-midrange internals. We could see the Snapdragon 765 running the show. However, we’re weeks away from the launch, so we’re expecting leaks and official announcements in the form of drip-feeds.
According to the product renders we saw on Weibo, the Velvet looks like a narrow and tall phone. The renders also show an in-display camera notch for the selfie shooter. Also, the ThinQ branding still exists. The phone is expected to be available in poppy colors, which is also what we see in these renders.
We don’t know about you, but these renders remind us of Sony’s Xperia line of phones.
We hope LG prices this one good. They’ve been struggling to get their mobile phone division to make profits, and there could be no better time for them to capture their lost market (and some more) with this new product lineup revamp. With the Velvet, the G-series – one of the oldest Android flagship lineups – is gone, and the V-series is probably going soon too. LG is hoping to connect and express better to its customers with the new phones they’re coming up with.
It would be too early to predict a launch date of the LG Velvet, but Korean news portal Naver reported earlier this month that LG shall launch the new phone on May 15th. The LG Velvet is touted to be a “mass premium” device, which means it wouldn’t compete with flagships like the S20 Ultra or the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro, but would fall more in the upper-midrange segment.
